Energy Management Systems (
EMS) overview

All the Log-One EMS are pre-programmed until 2099. Depending on the models, data (and/or date) is either stored in a clock with a ten-year battery back up or in permanent memory (no battery required). Most of the EMS work in conjunction with a motion detector and/or door contact and/or proximity sensor, or a photocell. They all include the common features described in more detail in the following sections; their differences lie mainly in sensing, in the devices they control and how they control Heat, Air Conditioning, Fan, Damper, Lights...

EMS-APT

Designed specifically for APARTMENTS this EMS can control different types of heating systems / heat pumps. The small dome of the motion detector protrudes through the front panel (if required extra motion detectors can be mounted remotely). An LCD display shows the temperature, the mode (Heat, A/C, Vacant)… The user is limited in the amount of override s/he requests (i.e. +3C max. in the heat mode). Timers ensure that when motion is not detected, end user requested overrides are removed and eventually the pre-programmed set back temperature is reached after a maximum of 4 hours.

In the A/C mode, after 18 hours of no occupancy, the A/C is completely turned off (maximizing energy savings during weekends and vacation time). All the parameters (set back temperature, amount of override permitted… can be re-programmed via any computer with an RS232 port.

APPLICATIONS: Apartments, non-profit housing, Social Housing, rental homes…

EMS-ETS

Designed specifically for ELECTRIC THERMAL STORAGE (ETS) heaters, this EMS is also capable of controlling another type of heating system (or Unit Ventilator).

            Between

Between Depending on options this EMS also controls: Lighting, Fan, Damper, Heat-ETS, Heat-HRV, storage. True Alarm output available.

APPLICATIONS: Electrical Thermal Storage heaters with or without “Emergency/back-up” heat.

EMS-HALL

Designed specifically for HALLS AND CONFERENCE ROOMS, this Energy Management System works with motion detectors and/or door contacts. It has 4 levels of temperature set back according to timers. Every level of temperature (and its corresponding timer) is programmable. Deep set back and extremely fast pay back can be achieved. For example: motion detected = 21C (the user can override the settings within programmable limits), no motion for 30 min. = 19C, no motion for another 30 min = 17C, no motion for another 2 hours = 10C. The same applies with A/C.

APPLICATIONS: stores, halls… anywhere where a shallow or a deep set back temperature can save energy when the premises are unoccupied for short or long periods of time.

EMS-HOTEL

This particular model of EMS was designed for HOTEL / MOTEL applications. It communicates with a central Personal Computer (IBM or compatible PC) which runs Windows 95 (or higher) and therefore is multitasking. Every EMS can be addressed from the central location and all the parameters (ambient temperature, different level of temperature set back, timers…) can be changed individually or globally at any time.

As in the EMS-APT, the user is limited in the amount of temperature override they request. A motion detector only or a motion detector and a door contact can work in conjunction with the EMS for very precise occupancy detection (patent pending).

APPLICATIONS: Hotels/Motels, apartment buildings… Any application where the EMS need to be networked and the basic set points need to be changed/re-programmed from a central location.

EMS-LIGHT

This Green Thermostat™ uses a PHOTOCELL (light sensor): thirty (30) seconds after the lights are turned on the thermostat maintains the preset “occupied” temperature. Five (5) minutes after the lights are turned off the thermostat maintains the preset “unoccupied” temperature.

Programmable time delays ensure that these cycles are not turned on and off by short periods of darkness/light. An LCD display shows the temperature, the mode (Heat, A/C, Auto)… The user is limited in the amount of override s/he requests (i.e. +3C max. in the heat mode). All important parameters are programmable via any computer with an RS232 port.

APPLICATIONS: stores, halls… anywhere where a shallow or a deep set back temperature can save energy when the lights are turned off for short or long periods of time.

EMS-HPMP

This EMS is designed to control a HEAT-PUMP system. While the outside temperature is above a programmed set point the Heat Pump controls the space temperature. When the outside drops below the set point, the EMS disables the Heat Pump and controls the space temperature using another heating source (i.e. baseboards).

APPLICATIONS: any apartment or home with a heat pump system.

EMS-S296

Designed specifically for locations heated with BASEBOARD HEATERS and where occupancy can be predicted, i.e. classrooms, offices. In order to further enhance energy savings the baseboard heaters are controlled in two banks. The preheat starts at 50% of total heat capacity and is monitored in real time. Except with very low outside temperatures in rooms with very poor insulation, the EMS-S296 can pre-heat the room with only 50% of available heat. When the rooms are occupied the heating is also easily achieved on 50% or less of total available kW. These features reduce peak kW demand by 50% on top of 36% energy savings. This model also incorporates a slide switch enabling the user to override the pre-set temperature by +/- 1 or 2C.

Depending on options this EMS also controls: Lighting, Fan, Ventilation, A/C. A Summary Alarm output is available.

APPLICATIONS: offices, classrooms, stores… any premises where occupancy is usually predictable and the heating system is baseboard or on/off type of heating system (for modulating type of heat or damper see EMS-SS99).

EMS-SS99

Designed specifically for locations heated with UNIT VENTILATORS and HRVs and where occupancy can be predicted, i.e. classrooms, offices, this EMS can control almost any type of heater (electric, hydronic (water), gas…) from any manufacturer either directly or by adding a “4-stage” relay board. Preheat starts at 50% of total heat capacity and room progress is monitored in real time. It incorporates a slide switch enabling the user to override the pre-set temperature by +/- 1 or 2C.

Depending on options this EMS also controls: Lighting, Fan, A/C, Damper (contact or modulating), different types of heat (gas, 0 --> 10v, Pulse Width Modulation, hydronic modulating valves...). A True Alarm output is available.

APPLICATIONS: offices, classrooms, stores… any premises where occupancy is usually predictable and the heating system requires a modulating heat output (0 -> 10v) or damper control.

EMS-WT95

Controls WATER (solenoid valve, mostly for urinals) from start time to stop time (or occupancy) on a timed basis / occupancy basis.
During vacation / weekends: ensures at least one flush per day to compensate for evaporation.

Depending on options this EMS can also control: Lighting, Fan, and Ventilation.

APPLICATION: urinals and other places where water needs to be controlled.

EMS-TIMER

This EMS is quite unique. It is a “SMART TIMER” pre-programmed for the next 20 years (including leap years, weekends, statutory holidays, daylight savings (on/off)…

It has 2 programmable on/off schedule times every day, plus a “working day schedule”. All of the above is automatically overridden in real time via a motion detector.

APPLICATIONS: replaces any other programmable timer (which does not have the advantage of being pre-programmed for the next 20 years) in offices, classrooms, stores…

POWER INTERFACE PANEL
(Pow-Int)

The POWER INTERFACE PANEL is a 6.5” x 10” galvanized metal enclosure (gauge 18) with a satin coat finish. For easy “recessed” mounting, the cover (baked enamel beige) is ¾” wider than the enclosure (8” x 12”).

The Pow-Int panel includes a 120 to 24v AC transformer (other voltages optional), and 2 “Power Relays” which can control 2 x 5KW banks of baseboard heaters (2 x 25 Amp. @ 240v). Up to 6 Power relays (Pow-Rel) can be mounted in the Power Interface Panel.

Pow-Rel:

Additional RELAYS (Pow-Rel) for the Power Interface (maximum load of 25 Amp.): up to a maximum of 6 relays per panel can be added to interface the EMS (or other devices) with “high voltage” lighting, heating, A/C, Fan…

Easily snaps in a 2 ¾” “Curtis” track.

Can be used for other applications (relay UL/CSA certified for 25 Amp. @240v).

DATA LOGGER:

A special software package allows most of the above mentioned EMS to be connected to a computer (via RS232) for Data Logging.

Information such as Time, Ambient Temperature, Heat (stage-1, stage-2), Fan, A/C…are written to a DOS text file once every minute, and every day the EMS creates a new file. Average computer storage needed is about 100K of hard drive per day. One hundred (100) days of continuous monitoring uses only 10 Mb of hard disk drive space, therefore an old laptop can easily be used for this task.

Files are easily imported to any spreadsheet program (i.e. Excel) to generate curves. Sums and averages can also easily be generated to show for example how long Heat was turned on (i.e. to calculate cost, savings…) or what is the average % occupancy during the week...
Data can be used for studies, projects and consulting on energy management.
